Instead of a Snow Day, a Cold Day!
I'm one of those mom's who gets up very early and checks the tv and school website to see if the kids have the day off due to either snow or extremely cold temps. Last night, I watched the news and there were many schools closed but not Northville. So, I got up around 5:30 to check the website and the news and most of the schools were closed but not ours. Mike goes out to breakfast in the mornings with his friends before school so he was up at 5:45 so him and I watched to see if they would announce our school but they never did. I went out to warm up Mike's car for him (it's either that or I give up my spot in the garage) and I couldn't believe how cold it was, his car almost didn't start. Anyway, Mike leaves goes to breakfast and on his way back to pick Chris up for school, he comes in the house and says they aren't letting anyone in school. Still, nothing posted on the schools website or on the news. All we knew was that the teachers were telling everyone to leave and go home. So, I'm now left not knowing if Billy and Joe's schools were also closed or if maybe it was just a problem at the High School. Finally around 7:30 Northville Public Schools pops up on the bottom of the tv screen. This leaves me to believe that either A: Our wonderful (NOT SO) superintendent woke up late this morning or,B: maybe there was a flood of phone calls from parents wondering why in the world they would have kids waiting at bus stops in -25 degree wind chills. I talked to a few friends today and we are all wondering the same thing. It was my understand that school would be canceled due to extreme cold temps so that the kids who wait at bus stops would not be exposed to these dangerous temps. How it worked this morning was actually worse than that, not only did the kids and parents believe that school was in session and went and waited at their bus stops, but the buses never arrived. This doesn't affect my boys because my high school guys drive to school, Bob drives Billy and Joe has door to door service. But, I know that a lot of parents are not pleased today with our school district. Nothing new about that. I really think this is just another example of the "so called educated ones" not knowing what the heck they are doing.
The bottom line is, the boys were all home today and thrilled, I was too. I'm not to sure why but I love when we get a freebe day. Bobby of course is in college so he still had school. Mike had a pretty productive day, he went to Lifetime and worked out and then went and returned $35 in returnable cans and now he's at the rec center playing basketball. Chris had a friend over this morning and then met Kelley for lunch and actually drove himself to his orthodontics's appointment. Billy has had a marathon on the computer and Joe and I made a trip to "target" our favorite store. Bob of course had to go to work and as he was leaving, he said "well, I hope you guys have a great day while I go to work and make money so that you guys can sit around and have a good time" We all said "OK". I am very appreciative that I'm able to be home and not have to worry about having a job outside of the house. I reminded Bob this morning that some of his employees may have kids who had to stay home from school today too and that they don't have the same luxury as I do. I have to say he's a great boss and is VERY understanding when it comes to kids and time off. I hope all the working mom's and stay home mom's were able to enjoy a little time with their kids today. I know I did!
