Forgiveness

I was searching today for a meaningful Bible verse that would help me in the "forgiveness" department and came upon this one. Ironically, the first one I came to was the exact same one my Mom used when I was growing up. I'm pretty sure my brothers and sisters will remember this one.

Forgive people when they do wrong things to you. If you forgive them, your Father in heaven will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive them, your Father will not forgive you.”

Matthew 6:12 and Matthew 6:14-15

Jesus told a story about forgiving people:

“Then Peter came to Jesus. ‘Lord, if my brother keeps on hurting me, how many times should I forgive him?’ he asked. ‘Should I forgive him seven times?’

Rescued From the Curse

Today's Scripture

“Christ has rescued us from the curse…” (Galatians 3:13, NLT).

I had a lady tell me the other day that she came from a very negative environment. The people who raised her were constantly putting her down. She didn’t feel like she measured up to her sister. She couldn’t seem to keep a good relationship and never got any good breaks. She finally said, “Joel, my life has been one disappointment after another. I think these people have literally cursed my future.” I told her what I’m telling you today, “Before anyone could curse you, God set you up for a life of blessing. It doesn’t matter what others have said about you; it only matters what God says about you. But you have to make the decision to agree with what He says about you and declare His truth over your life.

The Bible says that when two or more are in agreement, it shall be done. Friend, you and God are a majority! Declare today, “I’m a child of The Most High God. I am blessed and I cannot be cursed. I’m wearing my crown of favor. I’ve been equipped with everything I need to succeed in Jesus’ name!” When you declare what He says about you, you will move forward into the life of blessing He has for you!

A Prayer for Today

Father in heaven, thank You for setting me up for blessing. I choose to set my mind on You and declare Your promises over my life. I thank You for leading me into paths of righteousness. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Totally Relevant

Above all else guard your heart for it affects everything you do” (Proverbs 4:23).

These days, we hear a lot about detoxing our physical bodies. Bacteria can build up. Pesticides and chemicals can get into our system. Experts recommend that you go through a deep cleansing periodically and stay away from what is harmful so you can rid yourself of these toxins.

Bob sent me this today from one of his on line daily devotions. It's amazing how relevant it is to what's happening in so many of our lives today.

There are all kinds of toxins that can build up in our minds. When we go around dwelling on the wrong thoughts, thinking about what we can’t do, how somebody hurt us, or how we’ll never get ahead; those thoughts are toxic. And toxic thoughts left alone become like toxic waste. It gets into your heart, and eventually, contaminates your whole life. It affects your self-image, your attitude, and your level of confidence. That’s why the Bible tells us that we have to guard our hearts and minds above all else because if your mind gets polluted, your whole life is going to be polluted.

Make the decision today to go on a fast from negative, self-defeating thoughts. Cleanse your mind from what is harmful and fill yourself with thoughts of faith and victory. As you do, those good thoughts will strengthen and empower you to live the good life He has planned for you!

Father in heaven, I come to You today willing to let go of anything that would hold me back from Your great promises. I choose to guard my thoughts and fill my heart with Your Word. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Sweet Chelsea Anne

Here is her lastest Caringbridge Update:Tomorrow starts another journey for our Chelsea Anne. Due to the difficulty in coming off of the ventilator, it has been determined that Chelsea's best option is a tracheostomy. This is a vent that will go into her wind pipe" and allow her to breathe with the assistance of a portable ventilator. This has been a difficult decision for Jan & Dan, but the confidence that has been presented & the reality that Chelsea will have a much easier time with this procedure, and will be able to get into rehab for her legs sooner, it's the right thing to do. Tomorrow afternoon they will take her down for the surgery. The past 2 days have been good for Chelsea; her oxygen has maintained & suctioning of the secretions have been minimal. When Papa got there today, she was sitting up playing her guitar. Later she was "talking" (listening) to several cell phone calls------ she has a sense that when ever ANY cell phone vibrates, her hand goes up with that expression----"it's for me"!!!! Please ask all of our angels & saints-----and the blessed virgin Mary, to be with her again tomorrow----and of course every day---your prayers & requests have gotten her this far-----Jesus is watching over her ------and her Mom & Dad-------I just cannot believe their strengths; It can only come from faith in the Holy Spirit-----God is ever present in Chelsea's room.-----JESUS---WE TRUST IN YOU-----

With all the reminders to go out and vote today, I would like to remind everyone to stop and pray for Chelsea and Matt today. Chelsea is at Motts in Ann Arbor and is fighting with all her might to get off the ventilator. She was off it for about 18 hours this weekend but her lungs were just not ready to work on their own and had to be put back on it. Her Mom and Dad are amazingly strong but still, need your thoughts and prayers. Matt is back in the hospital receiving his second round of chemo and is staying strong and determined. He is one cool 14 year old.

Halloween

Joe was so happy to go trick or treating with a big group of kids last night. Mr. Storm showed up with Tony and Angie and their friends and they all went out together. Chris was the only other one in our family that dressed up. Kelley and him went to a party dressed in camo. I wish Halloween fell on the weekend every year, it was nice to relax and not worry about the boys going to school the next day.

We had an amazing time in Key West this past weekend and have so many stories to share but I will save those for later, maybe. If you happened to be watching the Hogs Breath Web Cam on Friday night, you had a glimpse of how much fun we really had. It was an exciting and yes relaxing time thanks to my wonderful boys and Sarah, Kelley, Jenn and of course, Uncle Rudy, Aunt Janet, Angie & Jenny. Billy and Joe certainly loved Aunt Janet's Spaghetti.

Chelsea has been moved to Motts at U of M in Ann Arbor. She is dealing with repertory issues that just could not be addressed at Providence. She is still on the ventilator and is experiencing difficulties with her lungs. Part of that is from the vent being in so long & the secretions draining into her lungs. The tentative plan is to try and remove the vent tomorrow. Her back is healing very nicely & looks great! The movement of her legs & feet still looks very promising. The "Spinal Shock" may take some time to go away. In the interim, she will receive physical rehab that will keep her legs ready for when they are fit to walk with again. We still have a lot of recovery ahead.

Your prayers are vital at this time-------- Chelsea DOES rally when the heavens explode with your prayers!!!! Please say a special prayer that they are successful in removing the vent tomorrow-----I know she will do better when she can breathe on her own. This has been a rocky road these past two weeks; Chelsea's Mom & Dad are just fantastic---- Even throughout all of the worry & emotions----their faith is still in Jesus. They have put Chelsea in His care; Please take a moment & ask God to place His hand over Chelsea & give her His blessings.------------THANK YOU JESUS, MARY & JOSEPH!!!! "JESUS----REMEMBER ME"-----

Chelsea's Mommy and Daddy are incredibly strong and positive during this very scary time and Chelsea is showing how strong and brave she is and always has been. Please keep praying for all of them. I've posted the lastest from Chelsea's Caringbridge.

I have some news.....We have had slight set back.Yesterday Chelsea was not able to move her legs...BUT it could be due to swelling or a couple of other things...she was moving them up until about 1:00 pm....so she went back into surgery sunday night,after an MRI didn't show anything wrong.....She is doing well still opening her eyes(slightly) and has waved to us....WE WILL NOT GIVE UP! the hope is that in time she will get the feeling back as she heals.....Just remember GOD and GANNA are holding her right now and if chelsea has anything to say about it this will not be a problem for long.....They wanted to take her off the vent yesterday before all this happened,but chelsea told them NO! (shook her head)..It would have been a VERY ROUGH thing to take her off and put her back on the vent...So she knows what she's doing....We love you all and please keep praying..thank you....Love MOM and DAD

SHE DID IT! She does have a ways to go with recovery...The Docs were very pleased with the results, her chest looks almost normal and her curve has gone from about 160 degrees to about 90 degrees! Which is what the docs were hoping for! We still need prayers to help her get through this TOUGH recovery but we all know chelsea's determination She will be on a ventilator for a few days to help with the healing process...We have to be more careful about her getting sick (cold/flu) so she doesn't have to fight a virus on top of trying to heal for the next 6 months or so...Thank You for all your thoughts and prayers we could not have done this with out them......LOVE, MOM AND DAD

Chelsea is still in surgery. They got started about 8:00 this morning-----Latest up
date 5 minutes ago (5:00PM) was that everything was going good, Chelsea has received 2 units of blood, & they were blowing warm air on her----(I don't know the significance of that) They have forecast at least 2 more hours of surgery. This has been a long day for her----& the doctors, & of course those of us waiting. ---We have the easy job-----Jan & Dan are trooping along.

Please stop what ever you may be doing while reading this & say a quick prayer---- Jesus is guiding this procedure----- Prayer is what is making this successful. I have asked all of the angels & saints to hold Chelsea; They have agreed to perform this service-----

Our Chelsea has been in surgery for a couple of hours now and it could be at least 6 o 8 more hours before they are finished. I talked to my sister Fran today and Matt is doing as well as expected. The chemo is making him pretty weak and sick but he is tolerating it. He is an amazing 14 year old. So brave and so positive. He will most likely be in the hospital for a month or so. I'm posting the address to the hospital so that anyone that would like to send him some encouraging mail, I think it would be great for him and I'm sure he would love it too. I also had the privilege of visiting our sweet Chelsea today. She had surgery yesterday in preparation for her major surgery on the 10th of October. This little girl is amazing. After everything she has been through and she continues to be happy and content. They built her a special little car to ride around in while hooked up to her "halo" traction. She loves to travel around the halls of Providence checking everything out. She's one smart cookie too! She's mastered using her Papa's cell phone and can call anyone she wants to. One thing for sure, she is definitely a girly girl and loves presents. If you want to send Chelsea something, you can send it Chelsea Wellman, Providence Hospital 16001 W. 9 Mile Rd. Most of all, we need everyone to pray for both Matt and Chelsea. We can't even begin to imagine how hard this is for them and for their family.

A few weeks ago, Bobby went to see our family doctor, Dr. Grose. He had a complete physical and had his blood drawn to check his cholesterol and whatever else they check. Bob and I were curious to know if he would be more like the Schniers or more like the Rays when it came to his "insides." Well, here are the results: Cholesterol 91 LDL 41 Triglyerides 18 HDL 46. In the note from Dr. Grose, he mentions that he's never seen anyone with such low cholesterol. Obviously, he's never seen mine. I can't wait to see the other boys results!

As I sit here in the cabana with Molly curled up next to me, it's a toasty 76 degrees thanks to a beautiful day and a great fire in the fireplace. Mikey is home this weekend and it's so nice to see his sweet face and get one of his big hugs. Bobby and Sarah are out at the movies, Chris is out with Kelley, Billy is playing his new "warhammer" game on the computer and Joe is running around shooting his airsoft gun minus the pellets. Bob and I are relaxing watching the tigers get into a brawl with the cleveland indians and can't figure out what just happened. So on this Friday night, I feel more content than usual and so thankful for the blessings God has shown me today.

Way to go Joe

As some might know, we live right behind the high school and the soccer field. In the fall there's soccer games at least two or three nights a week. Joe has been going to the games with either Billy or Bob for the past two weeks. Tonight, Billy went over and was able to sneak out without Joe tagging along. As soon as Joe realized that Billy was gone, he announced that he was going too, alone. Bob gave his 10.00 and told him that it cost 5.00 to get in and to make sure he got 5.00 in change and out the door he went with his cell phone in his pocket just in case. A few minutes after he left, Bob headed out the door in the other direction so that he could keep an eye on him but without Joe knowing he was being followed. I texted Billy and warned him that his little brother was on his way over and to keep an eye out for him. Billy was not exactly thrilled but said ok. Anyway, Joe stood in line all by himself bought a ticket and even used his change to buy pizza and a water totally by himself.

We are all so proud of him and he is beaming with pride!

Self Doubt

For some time now, I've been tossing around the idea of going back to work. I've been a stay at home mom and wife for the last 15 years and truthfully, I don't know where to start and I'm not really even sure I want to. Before staying home, I worked for a law firm and loved my job. I had great bosses and didn't have to worry about the boys because my amazing mom took care of them. After Billy was born, it was more than apparent that I needed to be home with my kids. When I first quit, I was worried that more would be expected of me as a mom because I was home full time. For some reason, when I worked I felt I had an excuse if the laundry wasn't done or if I forgot to send in the kids field trip money or God forbid, I lost my temper and smacked one of them on the butt. Well now, it's 15 years later and I'm worried about how I can fit back into the working world. I've considered everything from working for another law firm to being an aide on the school bus to working at McDonalds. Seriously, I made a comment to one of my friends the other day that at least if I worked at McDonalds I wouldn't have all eyes on me waiting for me to fall on my face. Yes, there are some people out there just waiting and hoping I do just that. I figured a no brainer job would be the safest job. Now, I have Sarah Palin who seems to be wonder woman haunting me. Not only does she have 5 kids she also wants to be the Vice President of the United States of America. Don't get me wrong, I am all for confident strong women, I have sisters who have successful careers and kids and grand kids. I'm just having a moment of doubt and wondering how I can "do it all" without sacrificing something or someone. I've been told that just because you have occasional self doubt, it doesn't mean you really doubt yourself. That's a good thing to know.

Back to School

Chris and Billy were off to school by 7:00 and Joe's bus (with a new bus driver) arrived at 8:10. Joe let me take a picture of him on the front porch but said "no pictures on the bus". I'm lucky I got the one I did.

Bob's cousins wife Paula and her two little boys will be here at 11:00 to swim and my friend Amy and her little one, Nathan are coming over around 1:00 and bringing lunch. No time to worry about Joe and how his day is going. That's a good thing.

We took Mike up to school last Friday and because he really didn't have much to do this week, he came back home. So tomorrow, he officially leaves for the 2nd time. Bobby arranged for the four of them to all go golfing this morning and we all went out for dinner tonight for another Mikey goodbye dinner. This could continue for awhile seeing he will be back home again next Friday for the labor day weekend.

We moved Mikey up to Grand Valley today. He's sharing a house with his friend Chase and two other guys. I am so excited and scared for him at the same time. If you know Mikey, you know that he comes off as a tough guy but really, he is the most sensitive of all my boys. I did just fine helping him make his bed and putting his clothes away and I even was ok hugging him goodbye. It didn't really hit me until I got home and went into his room. It was then that the tears started to flow and haven't stopped. I'm really going to miss my Mikey.

Amazing Trip

We had the most amazing 4 days in Tucson. Bob reunited with aunts, uncles and cousins that he hadn't seen in 30 years, the boys had an instant bond with their cousins that they met for the first time. I was welcomed with warm genuine hugs. The Gonzalez Family opened their hearts and their homes to all of us and we will always remember this trip as one of the best times ever.

First, our Chelsea is home tonight with her "halo" and all the gear that goes with it. It looks as if the plan is to "fatten" her up (only if we could give her some of Joe's, that would be great) and perform the surgery in the next month or so. Remember, the "halo" will be 10 lbs and her little body is only 25 lbs. Please continue to pray for her and her family as they tread new waters here. I'm sure it is wonderful having her home but also pretty scary. I've mentioned it before, you can visit Chelsea's Caringbridge Site that is highlighted in a few posts below. She loves to get messages from everyone, even if she doesn't know you. It's so easy and quick to set up an account with caringbridge and sign her guest book. It would definitely put a big smile on her face.

Bahama Bob's was once again, a great success. We were down about 4 people from last year and I felt the band was better last year too. But, it was still a really fun night. Thank you to all of you that came and celebrated with us and a special thanks to my good friend Amy who surprised us early Sunday morning with garbage bags in hand ready to clean up. We really love our family and friends.

Now, the next Rays adventure. Friday morning @ 4:00 A.M. we are heading to Tucson Arizona with Bob's family. The boys and I have never met any of Bob's cousins and aunts and uncles from his Dad's (Cesar) side of the family. It will be quite a reunion. Please pray that everything goes smoothly and of course pray that we all get along and most of all, pray that this will be such a wonderful experience not only for us, but for Bob's dad. He hasn't had much of an opportunity to be with his family from Mexico and my hopes are that he will have this time to share all of us with all of them. Words can't possibly explain how wonderful Bob's dad is, he is the best of the best. Honestly, if you've met him you will know what I'm talking about. If you haven't it's a must. He's almost 83 and has more spunk and energy than most 40 year old guys.

Well, it's almost midnight and I'm still up waiting for one more load of laundry to dry so that I can go to bed. I only have about 25 more loads to do tomorrow. Apparently, I;m petty behind in the laundry category. Truthfully, I'm behind in many categories. On well, it will all still be here waiting for me on Monday.

While Chris was up north in Traverse City with Kelley and her family, they went to Pirate's Cove. When the boys were younger, most of our vacations were spent in camp grounds camping. One of our regular spots was Traverse City State Park. We spent most of our nights walking to the local pizza and ice creams hangouts and visiting Pirate's Cove where we would play putt putt and go on the water slide. Anyway, according to Kelley, Chris was sooo excited that he made them all walk around and check out all the spots he enjoyed as a little boy. He even called his Dad from there and made Bob try and guess where he was at. It made us both feel good that he has such great memories. I'm also glad that he chose to remember the good times and not all the times we would threaten to pack up and take them all home if they didn't behave.

As I'm typing this, Chris just handed me his putt putt score sheet from Pirate's Cove and said "when you blog about me Mom, you can put a picture showing that I won the Putt Putt game". Here you go Chris this ones just for you. You'll always be my little bit. Love you.

Over the Fourth of July Bobby and Sarah went to Pigeon Forge, TN. Bobby drove down there with Sarah's family. They left last Wednesday and came home on Tuesday. They spent each day hiking through the Great Smokey Mountains and came home with some amazing photos and stories. This was the first time Bobby had ever stayed in Tennessee. We had gone through there before on the way to Florida, but we had never stayed there. Looking at the photos it seems like they had a great time.

Lately, I've had little or no interest in blogging. It's strange, It's certainly not for a lack of excitement around here. I've had a few phone calls asking if we are ok because I've been absent from my blog. Yes, everything is just fine.

So, I'll just give everyone an update. Bobby and Sarah went to Tenn. with her family for the holiday and are returning tomorrow. Chris was at camp for a week and then went up north with Kelley and her family and returned today. We celebrated the 4th of July here at home and barbecued and swam and hung out with the Mike, Nicole and their kidos and Mike and Judy. Sunday, Bob's Uncle Rich and Aunt Phyllis had their annual party at the park so we headed over there with Mike, Jenn, Billy & Joe for a few hours and had a great time.

This week, Joe starts back on his three day a week therapy. I know it's absolutely necessary but neither one of us are too thrilled about getting back into the grind of running to Huntington Woods and Whitmore Lake three times a week.

Bob is still running almost everyday and has been consistently working out with me at the rec center since April. It's been very cool working out with my hubby and I think he has a new respect for my "girlie" workout.

In the next few weeks, Bob and I have a few really great "dates" planned minus kids and the first week of August all of us are heading to Arizona to celebrated his Uncle Homer's 80th birthday. Mike will be moving to Grand Valley the third week of August and that will certainly be a very exciting time for him and a very emotional time for the rest of us.

Joe is home from probably the most exciting week of his life. He has so many stories to share and has spent a good amount of his time on the Internet just checking out all the pictures from the week. He is utterly exhausted and is sporting a couple of camp injuries that he is proudly showing off.

Talked to Bobby, Joe's counselor at camp today and he said that Joe slept great the past two nights and was having a great time. It's only been 24 hours since we dropped Joe at camp but I miss him so much! Only 96 hours to go! I anticipated it being tough but not this tough. I'm sure he's doing better than I am.

I took these pictures while getting a tour of where he will be staying. He was all smiles and very excited until it was time for the goodbyes. As we were walking away, he decided he really needed to go home and play a little "rock band" with his brothers. His counselor Bobby, was able to distract him as they played on the old firetruck. Don't misunderstand me, I know how great this will be for him.

It's been quite a week for Joe. On Tuesday, he had his first baseball game as a Kansas City Royal. He plays for the miracle league and honestly, he is the miracle league. He was awesome and literally fielded every ball hit to the outfield and proudly tells everyone that he hit the pitcher in the " "'s with a line drive. We celebrated his 10th birthday yesterday and I believe it was his best one yet and on Sunday, he leaves for Springhill camp for 6 days.

In preparation for Camp, Joe has been in "mommy boot camp" for the past two weeks or so. I'm so use to doing everything for him that I forget that he can do so many things for himself. So, I have been trying to fit in years of independence into two weeks. He's doing great but it's been very emotional for me. It's been wonderful to see how independent he can be and how very important it is for him to be able to take care of some basis needs but it's also so very hard to let go. There's been many tears around our house and most of them have been mine. The boys have started to voice their concerns about him being gone for 5 nights without any of us. I've reassured them that the worse case scenario would be that we would go and pick him up (we are not telling him that). We won't make him stay there if he really wants to come home. I really believe that he will handle this separation better than the rest of us.

So, please keep ALL of us in your prayers this weekend as we send our Joe off to "sleepover" camp.

We went to the Jimmy Buffett concert yesterday with Mike and Judy. We got there early and tailgated from 3:00 until the concert started at 8:00. Bob even got a chance to play a little "jimmy buffett" rock band with a "shark guitar". We had a blast hanging out with our friends and meeting new ones too!

Judy and I were very happy that we set up right next to a chartered bus. We made friends with everyone quickly and they were nice enough to let us use their bathroom.

Our escape from reality

95 degree sunny days, sunrises, walking on the beach with the man of my dreams, witnessing God's wonders in the sky, hanging at the pool, afternoon naps, finding a beautiful star fish right under our feet, checking out the hot fishing spots, alligator farms and air boat rides, being crazy at the local hangout, walking the streets of Ft. Lauderdale, driving in the rain with the top down, cruising down AIA singing Jimmy Buffett, people watching in South Beach, witnessing an amazing rain and lightening storm from our balcony overlooking the ocean. Even losing a little money at the casino and of course, visiting a local outlet mall.

As for our flight home, I only really remember the last 45 minutes or so of it. It was the best flight ever.

When we got home this morning, we found the boys and the house in one piece and everyone seems like they did really good while we were gone. I have the best boys in town, all 6 of them. Love you guys!

Thank you to my sister Fran for the use of her beautiful condo in hot sunny Pompano Beach and to Rudy and Janet for being there for my boys and to my sister Margie for stepping in and taking Joe to baseball tomorrow and to Emily for helping out too. Bob has a special thank you for my sister Patty who just minutes before boarding the plane this afternoon very firmly but lovingly, talked me into getting on the plane as I was in tears on the phone with her. If you are that ONE person that doesn't know, I have a terrible fear of flying. Needless to say, Patty's sisterly advice worked. Maybe one day I was share what she said to convince me to get on the plane. I am incredibly blessed with nine wonderful brothers and sisters. Last but certainly not least, my sweet five sons. Thank you for letting me take your father away for his 47th birthday.

Last Sunday, my niece Angie graduated with honors from Madonna University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, BSN degree. She is officially a Register Nurse and already has a job at Providence Hospital in Labor and Delivery. They are so lucky to have her. My very talented nephew Jacob became engaged at Christmas to his soon to be bride, Sheri. My sister Therese (Jake's Mom), shared with me some Jake and Sheri info and I'm sharing it with all of you. They are such a cute couple and we wish them a wonderful life together.

Sheri and Jake met in college. Jake wanted to get to know her better, so he threw himself a birthday party and invited her. They've been together ever since, about four years.

Sheri is an elementary music teacher and is getting her Master's in elementary education. Sheri also majored in vocal performance and plays the flute. Her family is Jewish and they are planning a traditional Jewish wedding.

Jacob teaches Suzuki violin, plays a variety of gigs, and performs regulary with several area orchestras.

They are planning a wedding at Brook Lodge in August 2009.

Sheri's easy-going personality fits very nicely into our family. Her family is just as nice, and they are equally supportive and loving to Jacob.

SOME MOTHERS GET BABIES WITH SOMETHING MORE... by. Lori Borgman

My friend is expecting her first child. People keep asking what she wants. She smiles demurely, shakes her head and gives the answer mothers have given throughout the ages of time. She says it doesn't matter whether it's a boy or a girl. She just wants it to have ten fingers and ten toes. Of course, that's what she says. That's what mothers have always said.

Mothers lie.

Truth be told, every mother wants a whole lot more. Every mother wants a perfectly healthy baby with a round head, rosebud lips, button nose, beautiful eyes and satin skin. Every mother wants a baby so gorgeous that people will pity the Gerber baby for being flat-out ugly. Every mother wants a baby that will roll over, sit up and take those first steps right on schedule. Every mother wants a baby that can see, hear, run, jump and fire neurons by the billions. She wants a kid that can smack the ball out of the park and do toe points that are the envy of the entire ballet class. Call it greed if you want, but we mothers want what we want.

Some mothers get babies with something more. Some mothers get babies with conditions they can't pronounce, a spine that didn't fuse, a missing chromosome or a palette that didn't close. Most of those mothers can remember the time, the place, the shoes they were wearing and the color of the walls in the small, suffocating room where the doctor uttered the words that took their breath away. It felt like recess in the fourth grade when you didn't see the kick ball coming and it knocked the wind clean out of you. Some mothers leave the hospital with a healthy bundle, then, months, even years later, take him in for a routine visit, or schedule her for a well check, and crash head first into a brick wall as they bear the brunt of devastating news. It can't be possible! That doesn't run in our family. Can this really be happening in our lifetime?

I am a woman who watches the Olympics for the sheer thrill of seeing finely sculpted bodies. It's not a lust thing; it's a wondrous thing. The athletes appear as specimens without flaw - rippling muscles with nary an ounce of flab or fat, virtual powerhouses of strength with lungs and limbs working in perfect harmony. Then the athlete walks over to a tote bag, rustles through the contents and pulls out an inhaler. As I've told my own kids, be it on the way to physical therapy after a third knee surgery, or on a trip home from an echo cardiogram, there's no such thing as a perfect body. Everybody will bear something at some time or another.
Maybe the affliction will be apparent to curious eyes, or maybe it will be unseen, quietly treated with trips to the doctor, medication or surgery. The health problems our children have experienced have been minimal and manageable, so I watch with keen interest and great admiration the mothers of children with serious disabilities, and wonder how they do it. Frankly, sometimes you mothers scare me. How you lift that child in and out of a wheelchair 20 times a day. How you monitor tests, track medications, regulate diet and serve as the gatekeeper to a hundred specialists yammering in your ear. I wonder how you endure the praise and the platitudes, well-intentioned souls explaining how God is at work when you've occasionally questioned if God is on strike. I even wonder how you endure schmaltzy pieces like this one saluting you, painting you as hero and saint, when you know you’re ordinary. You snap, you bark, you bite. You didn't volunteer for this. You didn't jump up and down in the motherhood line yelling, "Choose me, God! Choose me! I've got what it takes."

You're a woman who doesn't have time to step back and put things in perspective, so, please, let me do it for you. From where I sit, you're way ahead ahead of the pack. You've developed the strength of a draft horse while holding onto the delicacy of a daffodil. You have a heart that melts like chocolate in a glove box in July, carefully counter-balanced against the stubbornness of an Ozark mule. You can be warm and tender one minute, and when circumstances require intense and aggressive the next. You are the mother, advocate and protector of a child with a disability. You're a neighbor, a friend, a stranger I pass at the mall. You're the woman I sit next to at church, my cousin and my sister-in-law. You're a woman who wanted ten fingers and ten toes, and got something more.

You're a wonder.

Tonight, we took the boys and their girls to Lucky's to celebrate Bobby's 21st Birthday. His birthday isn't until Monday the 28th but tonight was the only night we could get all of us together and Monday he has some of his own plans. I love the fact that we can have a good size party with just our family. It's one of the many perks of having so many kids.

In past years, Joe participated in all the spring musicals but never actually had his "own" speaking part. This year, his music teacher, Mrs. Jacqueline Lenze gave Joe the opportunity to have his very own part. He was simply amazing. To watch my Joe walk with such confidence up to the stage and pick up the microphone and speak clearing, took my breath away. We were all there to cheer him on (Chris of course, did a little more than that) and to see him up on the riser singing with this great big confident smile was priceless.

I'm humbly reminded tonight of Jer.29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

The other morning, my sister Therese called me and said that she had read my blog post about my weaknesses and thought that I should consider running a 5K run.

Now, you need to know that my beautiful and fit sister who is about 12 years older than I am has been training and running for years now and I can barely make it to my body pump classes 3 times a week.

As I'm typing this, my legs are so sore from all the squats and lunges that I can barely sit down on the toilet seat (sorry for those of you who didn't want to hear that) and rolling out of bed this morning took way to much effort because my abs were killing me. Just lifting my arms up over my head to blow dry my hair is a challenge. The good news is I've been back to body pump consistently for the past two weeks and as sore as I am, I'm actually seeing results and I like it.

So, the answer is Yes. I am going to take Therese up on her offer. I can't wait to get started.

I've posted a few pictures of my sister and her hubby John who run all winter long and are notable marathoners. Therese is the one in the front row with the fluorescent yellow jacket on and John is the runner in the blue in the picture of the two guys. I'm so impressed with both of them and more than a little scared with the thoughts of trying to keep up.

Today we had a family birthday party for Billy's 15th birthday. It was a beautiful day and we were able to spend time outside in the cabana. Even though the pool isn't open yet, it didn't stop Joe and Max (the jeffrey's puppy) from playing in the water.

Here's just 15 Billy facts in no particular order.

When Billy was 2, he would always say "eat eat" when he was hungry. He loves chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and would eat only that if he could.

Billy was my baby for 5 years before Joe was born and he will always be my baby Billy forever.

Everyday when Billy comes home from school, he never fails to ask me how my day was and he really wants to know.

He is my tallest son and at 15, he's 6"1 and will most likely be at least 6"4 by the time he's 18 years old.

He has an amazing quick wit about him.

He puts up with so much abuse from Joe and usually takes it pretty well.

He's definitely a chick magnet.

He is the "guitar hero" pro at our house.

He is a great skate boarder.

He loves just being home with his family.

He can pick a lock in record time.

Occasionally, I will still wake up and find him sleeping on the floor next to my bed.

He has such a good and caring heart.

He's best friends with everyone and truly cares about their feelings.

He has such a positive attitude even when he finds things difficult. He will say, "Mom, don't worry I can do it". I have no doubt that Bill will do whatever his heart leads him to do.

I love you my Billy Boy, and I'm incredibly proud of the young man that you are.

Tonight, Billy was at a buddy's house and around 8:30, the phone rang and I answered it and on the other end was a young girl who said, "Mrs. Rays, this is Allie and would it be ok if me and my friend came over tonight and surprise Billy for his birthday?" Of course, I said yes and then had to call Billy to make an excuse so that he would come home early from his friends house. I picked him up at 9:15 and told him that he had to clean up the basement and help me get ready for his party tomorrow. To say the least, he wasn't thrilled. When we got home, he headed downstairs and was greeted by these two cuties. He called up his buddy's and they are heading over right now. Nothing like a last minute surprise party.

Bobby is coaching and Mike is assisting Chris' rec basketball team and today was their first game. They won 37-33.

I know it sounds like brotherly love but, I was somewhat concerned with brotherly control issues. From what I was told, it was "all good" and everyone came home smiling.
